Graphic designing contrary to misconceptions was quite popular before the invention of the Printing Press a.k.a Gutenberg press.
These designs can be found in the earlier religious scriptures as well as the important cultures of that time.

3. Europe- Logos were used initially to represent family houses and territories. Only the members of the royal family and the affluent had the luxury of using logos. They were later used to denote bars for weary travelers.
Advent of printing press altered the course of history due to it’s wide ranging advantages and uses. Printing press was used to recreate text, art and design. This also led to the invention of newspaper. The ancestors of modern companies realized that visual designs could affect shopping behavior which ultimately gave rise to the modern graphics.
One of the first logos printed were used to determine the quality of the print available. Clear logos meant clear print. One of the first advertisements started with the printing of newspapers. Technological advancements led to printing in color and chromolithography.
