An efficient team builds an efficient company, this two-part article talks about the troubles of a remote design studio and ways to tackle them!

There’s no solution, only communication!

A creative community needs to communicate face-to-face brainstorming in order to create contemporary work. Lack of supervision and streamlining will only result in chaos and confusion. Lack of communication leads to obstacles which could have dealt quickly in a workspace. The isolation has caused a greater sector to be disgruntled with their work without the informal social meets.Home is typically not a place of peace and employees are often distracted by the various issues happening in that environment.

Managing Teams

Managing remote teams is hard due to lack of face-to-face communication typical in a physical workplace. Hence manager need to stay updated and on top of the process.

  • Assigning tasks in the morning

These tasks are not designated but the employee has chosen them making them feel responsible for the task and its outcome. The tasks are delegated and the heads are decided. This ensure clear and concise communication between the employees.

  • Time for doubts and problems should be set

The team calls ensure all the team members are on the same page. Different medias have different advantages. You won’t use video call for something simple enough like an email. Using these media for optimum communication is very important. Rules of engagement are set, who is supposed to do what. This ensures employees being responsible for their own work while coordinating with others for collaborative work. Time for doubts and problems is set in order to avoid confusion or miscommunication. This should be during team calls where everyone is present.

  • Hiring employees who are driven.

Remote work only maximizes the doubts a disgruntled employee will have. Hence, hiring the right candidate is the single most important factor. An ideal candidate feels driven, ambitious and curious. They have certain expectations from themselves. They feel responsible for their own work. They not only belong to the company culture, they thrive to maintain it. It’s some uncertain times but having employees to count on can certainly help you.

Concluding…

We would just like to say that as a design studio these are some tough times. Problems arise, challenges come out the blue yet one must never give up. These times should strengthen your vision, not, getting disillusioned. Tough times create tough people. So, to all the designers and mangers we would just like to say that if you wallow in pity, you will find sympathy not solution. Communicate & Create
